The University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) will recognize five outstanding individuals for their exceptional contributions to leadership, service, education, industry, and community development during its 93rd Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
This year’s awardees represent a legacy of excellence across the Caribbean and the diaspora, embodying the spirit of service and transformational impact reflected in the University’s commencement theme, “Anchored in God, Advancing in Excellence.”
Honorary Doctorate Degree Recipients
USC will confer honorary doctoral degrees upon three accomplished leaders whose professional achievements and contributions have significantly influenced national and regional development.

Mr. Fitzroy Harewood, President of Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited and distinguished USC alumnus, will receive the Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa). With more than four decades of leadership in the energy and industrial sectors, Mr. Harewood has demonstrated exceptional commitment to operational excellence, innovation, mentorship, and national development.

Mrs. Claire Hosten will receive the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) in recognition of her outstanding contributions to education, leadership, mentorship, and community development. A respected educator, advocate, and servant leader, Mrs. Hosten has dedicated her life to empowering individuals, strengthening institutions, and advancing values-based leadership throughout the Caribbean and diaspora communities.

Mr. Sieunarine Persad Coosal, Group Executive Chairman and Managing Director of the Coosal’s Group of Companies, will receive the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). A pioneering entrepreneur and innovator in the construction and manufacturing sectors, Mr. Coosal has played a transformative role in national and regional development through visionary leadership, sustainable enterprise, and industrial innovation.
Spirit of USC Award Recipients
The University will also present the Spirit of USC Award to two esteemed alumnae whose lives and service continue to reflect the mission and values of the institution.

Mrs. Shirley Lake-King will be recognized for her decades of exemplary leadership in finance, administration, and higher education. Through her career, including her tenure as Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer at the University of the Virgin Islands, she has demonstrated steadfast commitment to stewardship, institutional advancement, and student-centered leadership

Mrs. Lorna Wilson-DeLancy will also receive the Spirit of USC Award in recognition of her more than 45 years of service in healthcare and community outreach, particularly in advancing cancer awareness and prevention initiatives in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. A devoted alumna and longstanding leader within the USC Alumni Association, she continues to exemplify faithful service, excellence, and commitment to her alma mater.
As USC prepares to celebrate its graduating Class of 2026, the University proudly recognizes these individuals for lives marked by integrity, achievement, faith, and enduring service to humanity.
