On Sunday, 14 June 2026, fourteen students participated in a beach clean-up initiative at Matura Beach under the theme “Being a Leader Outside Campus Walls.” The activity was coordinated by the Associated Student Body Commuting Director Ms. Jewel Melville and provided students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful community service while contributing to environmental conservation.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the initiative, Commuting Director Ms. Jewel Melville explained that the beach clean-up originated from a shared effort between the Associated Student Body (ASB) and the Spiritual Department as part of the AOK-100 Initiative. She noted the importance of extending student engagement beyond the classroom and redefining leadership in practical terms.

“The beach cleanup initially came from an ASB joint willingness to engage with the students in collaboration with the Spiritual Department for the AOK-100 Initiative. I coined the theme ‘Leaders Outside Our Campus Walls’ because I felt it was important to encourage our USCians to see leadership as something that extends beyond titles and campus boundaries. Going out into the community has taught me that impactful change doesn’t depend on how complicated an initiative is, but on having a willingness to act and approaching every opportunity with purpose,” she shared.

The beach clean-up formed part of the institution’s 100 Acts of Kindness Initiative, a programme that encourages students, alumni, lecturers, staff, and other members of the university community to positively impact society through acts of service, compassion, and community involvement.

Matura Beach was a fitting location for the activity, as it is widely recognized not only for its natural beauty but also as an important turtle nesting and turtle-watching site. This made the initiative especially meaningful, as maintaining a clean beach contributes to the protection of marine life and the preservation of fragile coastal ecosystems.

Throughout the day, students worked together to collect and properly dispose of waste along the shoreline. The volunteers successfully collected 16 bags of waste, preventing a substantial amount of pollution from remaining in the coastal ecosystem and helping to preserve the beach’s natural environment. Although the task was physically demanding at times, participants remained committed and worked collaboratively to achieve the group’s goal of leaving the beach cleaner than they found it.

Beyond the clean-up effort, the event also provided an opportunity for fellowship and relationship building. Students spent time talking, playing games, and getting to know one another outside of the academic environment. These interactions strengthened friendships and fostered a greater sense of community among participants.

Reflecting on the experience, participant Hailee Cassar shared, “It was an honor to help. It was fun helping the environment. I wish I were able to clean up more, and I would definitely love to do it again.” Her comments reflected the enthusiasm and sense of purpose felt by many of the students involved.

The initiative also highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing environmental concerns. Participants gained a greater appreciation for the role individuals can play in protecting natural spaces and preserving them for future generations.

Overall, the beach clean-up was a successful and memorable experience that combined environmental responsibility, community engagement, and fellowship. Through their efforts, the fourteen participants made a meaningful contribution to the preservation of Matura Beach while supporting the goals of the university by maintaining excellence.
