There are individuals whose work is rarely in the spotlight, yet their influence is felt in every successful event, every smooth operation, and every positive experience across campus. During Administrative Professionals Week, the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) took the time to celebrate these individuals in a meaningful and impactful way. This year’s celebration was designed as a three-part professional development series, with the first session setting the tone for growth, reflection, and empowerment. Under the theme, “The Power We Carry, The Responsibility We Choose,” Part One invited administrative professionals to look beyond routine tasks and recognize the deeper impact of their roles. It was not only a celebration, but also the beginning of a journey aimed at strengthening skills and reaffirming purpose.

From the opening address, the tone was both affirming and inspiring. As shared by Director of Human Resources, Mrs. Marsha Ramsamoojh-Harris, “As administrative professionals, you are the backbone of this university… the steady hand behind complex operations, and the quiet force that keeps our institution functioning with excellence and integrity.” That message resonated throughout the session. The work of administrative professionals is woven into every aspect of the working life, from managing daily operations to ensuring that every interaction reflects excellence and care.

Behind her is a large digital screen displaying a web browser opened to Canva's homepage. The blurred heads of audience members are visible in the foreground.

The theme also challenged participants to think about how they carry out their responsibilities. The idea of “power” was reframed as influence through action, decision-making, and professionalism. This perspective elevated everyday responsibilities into meaningful contributions and highlighted the importance of consistency, integrity, and clear communication in shaping the university’s culture.

Part One of the series quickly moved from inspiration to action with an engaging Canva training session. The atmosphere shifted into one of creativity and collaboration as participants explored new tools to enhance their daily work. What began as a practical workshop evolved into an interactive experience filled with learning and innovation. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of design and reminded that “design is the art of combining creative and scientific elements… to communicate a message.” as stated by the Canva instructor for the session Ms. Jean-Rylle Pierre.

The slide is titled "Variety" and features green and yellow geometric shapes alongside text defining the design concept. The backs of attendees' heads are visible in the foreground.

This insight reinforced the importance of clear and effective communication in all aspects, even in visual form. Creating presentations and flyers became more than a task, it became an opportunity to represent professionalism and clarity in every piece of work produced. Equally significant was the emphasis on continuous development. In a rapidly changing environment, participants were encouraged to embrace learning as an essential part of their professional journey and necessary for maintaining excellence and adaptability.

By the end of the session, there was a renewed sense of pride and anticipation for what lies ahead. Administrative professionals were not only celebrated but also equipped and motivated for continued growth. As Mrs. Marsha Ramsamoojh-Harris’ message echoed throughout the room, it served as both affirmation and encouragement: “Your role matters. And the work you do every day contributes directly to the success and reputation of this institution.” With two more sessions to come, the journey continues. Administrative Professionals Day at USC is not just a moment of recognition, but a series of intentional steps toward excellence, empowerment, and lasting impact.
