MARACAS VALLEY, Trinidad and Tobago — September 17, 2026:
The University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) announces the appointment of Professor Stephen Joseph, PhD, as Provost, effective September 17, 2026.
Professor Joseph is an established scholar and higher education executive with more than 40 years of experience. His appointment marks a return to USC, where he served as Lecturer and Chair of the Department of History and Social Studies from 1990 to 2005.
“As we enter our centennial year, we are pleased to welcome Professor Joseph, a well respected scholar and academic administrator in Trinidad and Tobago and across the region,” said Professor Colwick Wilson, President of the University of the Southern Caribbean. “USC will benefit greatly from his expertise, experience and commitment to advancing the University’s vision.”
Professor Joseph most recently served at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), where he held several senior leadership positions, including Acting President; Vice President, Research, Academic and Student Affairs; and Assistant Vice President, Undergraduate Studies. In these roles, he provided strategic and academic leadership in institutional governance, programme development and review, quality assurance, accreditation, research development and student success.
Throughout his career, Professor Joseph has contributed significantly to education policy and institutional transformation. He led the development and revision of key academic policies at UTT, helped guide the institution through accreditation and reaccreditation processes, and established initiatives supporting teaching excellence, multidisciplinary research and instructional leadership. He also served as Project Manager for Education Quality Improvement at Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Education, overseeing major components of the secondary education reform programme.
An accomplished researcher and educator, Professor Joseph has authored more than 30 scholarly publications in areas including curriculum reform, teacher education, higher education quality and education policy. He has supervised more than 15 doctoral candidates to completion and has served as an external examiner, accreditation evaluator and adviser on national education matters.
Professor Joseph holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from The University of the West Indies, and a Master of Arts in History and a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction from Andrews University. His educational formation and extensive record of academic leadership align closely with USC’s commitment to Christ-centred education, scholarly excellence and service to humanity.
As Provost, Professor Joseph will provide leadership for the University’s academic enterprise, supporting academic quality, faculty development, research, innovation and student achievement.
His appointment comes at a significant moment in USC’s history as the University moves through its 100th year and prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2027.
