What began as an invitation for six students to showcase professional attire became one of the most engaging moments of the University of the Southern Caribbean’s (USC) President’s Convocation, as nearly two dozen male students and approximately seven female students stepped forward for an opportunity to be recognised as the University’s best dressed.
The enthusiastic response marked the launch of USC’s Dress for Success initiative, introduced by President Professor Colwick Wilson during his Convocation address on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the USC Auditorium. Guided by the tagline “Fit for the Future,” the campaign encourages students to develop the confidence, professional presentation and personal habits that will prepare them for opportunities beyond the classroom.
Held under the theme “Standing on Legacy, Stepping into Promise,” President’s Convocation provided the setting for Professor Wilson to introduce an initiative that encourages students to consider how personal presentation, confidence and professional conduct contribute to their preparation for life beyond university.

Students had been encouraged in advance to attend Convocation in professional attire, with prizes announced for the best dressed male and female students.
As participants presented themselves the audience was invited to express its support through applause. The intensity of the response to each candidate helped inform the deliberations of a panel of judges selected from faculty and staff members in attendance, who ultimately determined the winners in both categories.

Ms. Jahzara Johnson of Guyana was named Best Dressed Female Student, while Mr. Bradley Gabriel of Saint Lucia, a theology major, received the award for Best Dressed Male Student.

Johnson, who is also representing Guyana in USC’s Portraits of Excellence Scholarship Programme 2027, received a TT$500 gift card to Micles. Gabriel was awarded a TT$500 gift card to Detour. Other participants received gift cards from J&K Signature Styles, Anna Rebecca and Visions.
The spirited presentation introduced a conversation about the importance of professional appearance and the impressions students create as they prepare to enter environments where confidence, judgement and appropriate presentation are valued.
Dress for Success advances Academic Success, one of USC’s five strategic priorities under its SP100 framework, by equipping students with professional skills that complement their academic preparation.
Beyond qualifications and technical competence, students must understand the expectations of their chosen professions, including appropriate attire and personal presentation. These skills are particularly relevant as they prepare for interviews, internships, conferences and other professional engagements.
Rooted in USC’s philosophy of educating the head, heart and hand, the campaign also provided tangible support through the distribution of material for nursing uniforms to selected nursing students and laboratory coats to biology students. These presentations recognised the practical requirements of clinical and laboratory environments while helping students prepare for their respective fields.
Following its Convocation launch, Dress for Success will continue through initiatives led by USC’s academic schools and departments, allowing professional development activities to reflect the expectations of different disciplines. Faculty and staff will also have opportunities to reinforce these standards as part of the wider student experience.
Introduced during USC’s historic 100th academic intake, the campaign takes on added significance as the University approaches its centennial in 2027. Its message, “Fit for the Future,” reflects USC’s commitment to preparing a new generation of graduates with the confidence, character and practical competencies to excel in their professions and serve their communities.
What began as an enthusiastic student showcase will therefore continue as a campus-wide effort to make professional readiness an integral part of the USC experience, building upon the University’s legacy of holistic Christian education.
