As the University of the Southern Caribbean moves toward its 100th anniversary in 2027, a major transformation is unfolding at the threshold of its Maracas Valley campus: the modernization of the university’s main entrance.
The project is part of USC’s expanding portfolio of centennial initiatives under the banner “Journey to 100: Excellence in Motion.” While many of these initiatives focus on academic innovation, research, and community engagement, the entrance upgrade strengthens operational efficiency while modernizing key campus infrastructure.
The redesigned gateway introduces a series of functional and aesthetic improvements intended to better manage the daily flow of vehicles and pedestrians entering the campus. At the heart of the upgrade is an automated access system equipped with smart security features, including barriers, RFID-enabled entry points, CCTV monitoring, and turnstile access controls.
The project also includes the fabrication and installation of a newly upgraded guard booth, complete with air conditioning and restroom facilities, providing improved working conditions for campus security personnel responsible for monitoring access to the university.
For an institution that welcomes thousands of people each week – students, parents, visiting scholars, vendors, and regional partners, the campus entrance represents more than a point of access. It serves as the first impression of the university itself.
The surrounding entrance corridor has also been reimagined. The improvements include a new gateway structure, landscaped green spaces, pedestrian walkways with accessibility ramps and tactile paving, upgraded driveways and curbs, and enhanced security lighting designed to improve both visibility and safety.
Mr. Durey Arthur, CEO of SkyGrid Global and Project Principal, noted that the upgrade was conceived as more than a physical enhancement.
“We approached this not simply as an infrastructure upgrade, but as a strategic gateway. A campus entrance sets the tone for everything that follows, and our goal was to create one that is both welcoming and highly controlled. By integrating automated access control, intelligent traffic management, and real-time monitoring, we’ve created a system that strengthens security, reduces congestion, and delivers a smoother, more predictable experience for everyone entering the campus—while reflecting the university’s identity and future direction.”
University officials affirm that the redesigned entrance will allow for clearer access control while easing congestion during peak traffic periods, particularly during major campus events and the busiest weeks of the academic year.
Beyond logistics, the project also reinforces the university’s broader institutional identity. Well-designed infrastructure plays an important role in shaping how a campus is experienced, communicating values of order, hospitality, and excellence.
In the years ahead, thousands will pass through the renovated gateway: new students arriving to begin their USCian journey, alumni returning home, and visitors encountering the campus for the first time.
As the university approaches its centennial milestone, the upgraded entrance represents a clear step forward, a gateway to the institution’s next century.
