The Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists has marked a historic milestone with the appointment of Pastor Roxanne Moses as Director of Women’s, Children and Adolescents Ministries. Voted by the Conference Executive Committee at its recent year-end plenary meeting, Pastor Moses becomes the first Indigenous woman to serve in this portfolio. A moment of significance not only for the Conference, but for representation and inspiration across the wider church community.
The appointment follows the vacancy created when the former director, Pastor Carolyn Brandon, proceeded on study leave. The Conference has expressed heartfelt gratitude for Pastor Brandon’s visionary and Spirit-led service, while extending warm congratulations and prayers to Pastor Moses as she steps into this new role.
Reflecting on her appointment, Pastor Moses shared that her immediate focus is gaining clarity and understanding of the department’s expectations. While an initial orientation was scheduled, it has since been postponed, and she is intentionally taking time to familiarize herself with the scope of the ministry before outlining specific plans.
“I want to get familiar with what is expected in the department,” she shared. “Based on that, I think I can put my perceptions together, and whatever else should be done, I will integrate hopefully.”
Her response reflects a leadership posture grounded in discernment, seeking understanding first, then action.
Although she did not grow up anticipating the spotlight that now accompanies her role, Pastor Moses acknowledged the deeper meaning of her appointment as an Indigenous woman in leadership.
“Growing up, my mind was just on doing God’s work,” she said. “But when I came in, I realized…it’s only me. We do not have many people like me.”
She recalled her formative years in academic spaces where she was often the only Indigenous student, yet was met with support rather than exclusion. Today, she views her appointment as “extra special”, not for personal acclaim, but for the example it sets for younger Indigenous girls and women who may be considering ministry or leadership.
More than a title, her journey stands as a visible testimony that calling, faithfulness, and obedience can open doors previously unseen.
Pastor Roxanne Moses brings solid academic preparation to her role. She graduated from the University of the Southern Caribbean in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Theology with an emphasis in Pastoral Ministry. Her graduation during such a challenging global period underscores resilience, commitment, and faith, qualities that continue to define her ministry.
As the Guyana Conference celebrates this historic step, the wider church joins in prayer and trusting that God, who calls and chooses, will guide Pastor Roxanne Moses as she serves women, children, and adolescents with humility, faith, excellence and purpose. As her favorite scripture reminds us “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you…”- John 15:16. Affirming her divine calling to this important ministry.
