The University of the Southern Caribbean came alive on May 1st, 2025, in celebration of this year’s Health and Safety Day. Employees represented their departments in vibrant colours, proudly marching in an energetic display during the opening march pass. Joining the celebration were students from Caribbean Union College Secondary School and Maracas SDA Primary School. The day unfolded with informative health and safety presentations from various USC divisions, spotlighting essential practices that ensure well-being and protection across campus. Each presentation emphasized that safety isn’t just policy, it is USC’s culture.

President Dr. Colwick Wilson gave remarks, to the community:
“Each of us contributes to creating an environment where safety is part of the culture, not just a matter of compliance.”

Chief Inspector Mr. Franz Brisbane of OSHA took center stage, unveiling the theme: “ Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work.” He challenged the crowd, stating, “Technology may revolutionize tools, but it’s the culture that sustains change.” His call to embed safety into the foundation of work culture resonated deeply. The atmosphere softened with a delightful musical selection by the Maracas SDA Primary School, followed by the awarding of tokens to participating departments. Taking first place in the Health and Safety Day competition was the Department of Student Development, while Administration, Advancement & Planning and the Finance Department tied for second place.

Following the program, employees participated in a safety simulation coordinated by the OSHA Department and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service. In this exercise, employees were tasked with clearing the building- and impressively did so in under eight minutes. This simulation provided valuable lessons on how to respond effectively during a disaster.
Dr. Barbara Reynolds, Vice President for Administration, Advancement, and Planning, brought the program to a close with a heartfelt vote of thanks. Health, Safety, and Security Day 2025 not only highlighted the importance of a safe work environment but also fostered camaraderie and sportsmanship throughout the USC community.
