Great leaders in healthcare are often shaped not only by education, but by deeply personal experiences that ignite a passion for service. For Dr. Phyllis Woolford nursing was never just a career choice; it was a calling born from compassion, strengthened through years of clinical excellence, and transformed into a mission to educate and inspire others. Over the past two decades, her work has gone beyond the classroom, shaping the future of nursing in Trinidad and Tobago and empowering generations of students to serve with skill, confidence, and heart.

Dr. Woolford’s journey into nursing began with a deeply personal experience. As a secondary school student, Dr. Woolford and her sister helped care for their mother following a surgery. That period of compassion and responsibility sparked a lifelong passion for caring. At the age of eighteen (18), she moved to England to pursue nursing, and although the early stages were challenging, she soon discovered a deep sense of purpose in the profession.

Determined to grow, she advanced from Registered Nurse training into midwifery and later specialized in intensive care, where she spent fifteen years. It was in this high-pressure environment that she developed advanced clinical skills and, unexpectedly, a passion for teaching. Guiding students and colleagues revealed her desire to educate, ultimately leading her to pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education.

Her transition into academia began as a clinical instructor, where she emphasized the importance of delivering care that is caring, compassionate, and competent. In 2005, she was invited to Trinidad to establish a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC). What was intended to be a five-year commitment has now become over twenty years of service. Working alongside a team of educators, she helped develop a curriculum aligned with international standards at a time when nursing education was evolving globally.

One of her most impactful contributions has been the introduction of the skills and simulation labs at the University of the Southern Caribbean. These labs provide students with a safe environment to practice clinical skills before entering real healthcare settings. By simulating real-life scenarios, students gain confidence and strengthen their ability to connect theory with practice. The labs have transformed learning, with students eagerness to use the space to refine their skills and prepare for patient care.

The program has also grown through international collaboration, including the support of a Fulbright scholar who assisted with preparations for American accreditation. This reflects the institution’s commitment to maintaining high standards and expanding opportunities for its students.
For Dr. Woolford, the Women’s Day theme “Give to Gain” reflects her life’s work. Nursing gave her the foundation to succeed, and in return, she has dedicated herself to giving back through education. Her greatest contribution is the many nurses she has trained, who now serve communities both locally and internationally.

Looking ahead, she hopes to leave a legacy of nurses who are not only clinically competent but also deeply compassionate, delivering holistic care to their patients. She is also working toward establishing a Master’s program, ensuring that future generations have opportunities to advance.

Dr. Woolford’s story is one of dedication, growth, and service. Through her leadership, she has not only shaped a nursing program but has also inspired a generation of healthcare professionals to lead with skill, compassion, and purpose.
