After two years of targeted literacy intervention, USC’s Bridges to Excellence initiative continues to transform the education pipeline at San Juan North Secondary School.
The University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) continues to deepen its commitment to national development through its Bridges to Excellence initiative—an outreach programme under which USC has formally adopted San Juan North Secondary School (SJNSS). This partnership aligns with the Ministry of Education’s Adopt A School Programme, reinforcing USC’s role in building sustainable, community-centered educational support systems that contribute to long-term student success and national growth.

Now in its second year, the literacy component of the Bridges to Excellence initiative has moved from a diagnostic phase into targeted, strategic intervention. In its first year, the programme focused on identifying students’ specific literacy challenges through structured assessments. These diagnostics examined core components of reading development: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Findings indicated that the most critical areas requiring intervention were fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

In response, USC implemented intensive, research-informed remediation strategies designed to address these gaps. The impact of this work has already been measurable and encouraging. Notably, prior to the commencement of the second year, three students demonstrated sufficient progress to be reintegrated into their regular classroom environment—a significant milestone that speaks to both the effectiveness of the intervention and the potential of the students when given targeted support. The programme thus continued with 25 students with 15 who were consistent in attendance.
The second year of the initiative has shifted focus toward content area literacy, with an emphasis on Social Studies. This strategic move reflects an understanding that literacy is not confined to language arts but is foundational to learning across all subject areas. By embedding reading strategies within Social Studies content, students are being equipped not only to decode text, but to analyze, interpret, and engage meaningfully with academic material—skills essential for lifelong learning. Going forward other content areas will be targeted, the intent is for students to be able to independently use the strategies taught.
A notable development this year has been the integration of Teacher Education students into the initiative. Under the guidance of Mrs. Stephanie John-Anthony, students from EDTE245: Mathematics: Fundamentals and EDTE320: Teaching Developmental and Remedial Reading actively participated in the intervention. Their involvement represents a powerful intersection between theory and practice, as these pre-service teachers applied pedagogical strategies in real-world contexts. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment significantly enriched the programme while simultaneously strengthening their own preparation as future educators. This also meant that there was greater one on one contact with students needing remediation.
Despite several interruptions and challenges during the school term, the initiative successfully met key instructional targets, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and strong coordination among all stakeholders. This consistency is critical in ensuring that interventions translate into sustained student growth.
Beyond measurable academic gains, Bridges to Excellence is making a meaningful contribution to student development. Participants are not only improving their reading skills but are also building confidence, engagement, and a renewed sense of academic identity.
These outcomes are essential in reshaping how students perceive themselves as learners—particularly those who may have previously struggled.
At a broader level, the initiative represents a strategic investment in the education pipeline. By intervening at the secondary level, USC is helping to prepare students for future academic and career opportunities, thereby contributing to national development. The partnership with SJNSS exemplifies how higher education institutions can play a transformative role in supporting schools, strengthening communities, and fostering a culture of excellence.
