USC Alumna Earns Ph.D.

Faith-Ann McGarrell (AA '91, BA '93), a CUC graduate, earned her Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Andrews University in August, 2007.
Faith-Ann, the youngest child of Drs. Roy and Shirley McGarrell, attended CUC from 1989-1993 and during this time she completed an AA in Natural Science and a BA in English.  After serving for several years as an English/Language Arts teacher for grades 7-12 in both Ocala, Florida and Chicago, Illinois, she returned to school for her terminal degree.

While studying Faith-Ann taught Basic Writing and Freshman Composition part-time, and also served as the resource manager for CIRCLE, a curriculum and instruction resource for educators worldwide, sponsored by the North American Division of Education and housed at Andrews University.  While a graduate student she had the privilege of giving professional presentations at several national and international conferences such as the American Education Research Association (San Francisco & Chicago) and The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference (Indiana), and attending the 2nd World Conference of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies (Finland).  She has also published in the Journal of Adventist Education and had articles accepted for publication in the National Writing Project compilation Getting It In Writing.

Of her time at CUC Faith-Ann says, "I absolutely loved and enjoyed all of my teachers at CUC, especially the ones who made us walk the island for our course work--Pastor Daniel had us track down Bible studies and in Mr. Astor Dennis' classes we walked all over Trinidad doing research for our class presentations on social issues.  I also remember early Sabbath morning song services in the old chapel, which at the time was the new chapel, with Mrs. Headley and Daniel as superintendents.  The singing would echo throughout the valley.  Best of all, I enjoyed traipsing all over the island of Trinidad singing with Collegiates, and the Caribbean singing with Dr. Andrews and the Caribbean Chamber Singers.  So many wonderful memories that I continue to cherish."  She is proud of her alma mater.

Faith-Ann currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum in the School of Education at Andrews University.

She is enjoying the classroom teaching undergraduate teacher education courses and graduate curriculum and instruction courses.  She looks forward to continued professional growth and the 3rd World Conference of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies scheduled for South Africa in 2009.
