The 75th Graduation Exercises of the University of the Southern Caribbean began on Friday, May 16, 2008 with the Consecration service for the graduates.
| Pastor David Balfour presents the Homily |
The homily was presented by Pastor David Balfour, pastor of the Diego Martin District, South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. Using his extemporaneous preaching style, he elucidated on lessons drawn from the Class Text: Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” He challenged the graduates to become part of the community of believers—“the initiated”—who are able to understand the various workings of their lives, and come to the knowledge that every aspect of their existence is ordered by a power outside of themselves. He explained that members of this community of believers as so connected with God, in so much that they are not held hostages by the fears and challenges of life. They can come boldly to Jesus and presents themselves to Him; they have nothing to lose, only salvation to gain. “You may have made mistakes and your friends or family may have given up on you,” he added, “but remember as long as you are wrapped up in Jesus, and maintain that connection with Him, you will be complete. You don’t have to be ashamed; you have nothing to lose. All the experiences—the joys, the successes, the sorrows, the difficulties, the trials—all things work together, collectively, for the good of those who love God.”
| Graduates bow during the consecration prayer |
Dr. Boxter Kharbteng, Associate Professor in the School of Theology and Religion at USC, presented a special prayer of consecration for the graduating class. He petitioned God to place His hand of mercy on their heads, hearts and bodies as they prepare for service to the world. He prayed for God’s special blessing on them, and for His protection, love, peace and favor as they endeavour to serve all creatures—great and small. Special musical items for the service were presented by the University’s Youth Choir, HIS LUV—“Order My Steps” arranged by Burleigh, and accompanied by the music band; and a duet “I Waited on the Lord” arranged by Mendelssohn and sung by Llettesha Sylvester and Monique Augustine. The graduation exercises will continue on Saturday, May 17, with the Baccalaureate Service. Dr. Donald King, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Atlantic Union Conference, will present the Sermon. The commencement Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 18 during which time the degrees will be conferred on the graduates. The Honourable Orville London, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly will present the feature address at this ceremony.
